Falklands 40th Anniversary

Commemorating 40 Years since the Falklands War

As we mark 40 years since the end of the Falklands War, our veterans who were there are still in need of our support. In the years since the war ended, many Falklands veterans have returned to civilian life, some with physical wounds from battle, and many in need of help to live fulfilled independent lives. By getting involved in our fundraising campaign, The Falklands Forty Challenge, or buying from our Falklands shop collection, you really can make all the difference.

The Falklands War

In 1982, war broke out between Great Britain and Argentina over control of the Falkland Islands, with both countries having long laid claim to the islands. On 2nd April 1982, after protracted negotiations over the Falklands’ sovereignty, Argentina’s military government occupied the islands with around 10,000 troops. Britain responded by sending their own Armed Forces to the region and, within three months, British forces had defeated the Argentines and reoccupied the islands, sadly with significant loss on both sides. Now, some 40 years on, we must ensure all 908 lives lost during this war continue to be remembered.

Can you face the challenge?

Your challenge is to cover 40 miles during the month of May in support of our Falklands veterans.

The Falklands Forty Challenge is open to individuals or groups and is FREE to take part. Your challenge is to cover 40 miles anyway you like! Challenge yourself to walk, run, cycle or swim the distance in May and, together, we will honour the lives lost during the Falklands War and improve the lives of those who served.

STEVE’s Story

Steve joined the 1st battalion of the Welsh Guards in 1977 and served in both Northern Ireland and the Falklands. After an injury sustained whilst serving on the Sir Galahad he was medically discharged in 1989, aged 32.

Steve is now a Team Leader at RBLI’s Social Enterprise, Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, supervising a team who help create over 90% of the trackside signage for Network Rail and numerous other signs for UK roads each year.

Many veterans from the Falklands War, like Steve, are looking to us to help them regain their independence, access safe homes and support them to get back on their feet. Every penny raised across our Falklands campaigns will do just that.

RBLI’s social enterprise, Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, has a team of hard working men and women; many of whom have served our country or have a disability which impacts on their everyday life. Now, their skills are used in the manufacturing and fulfillment of many of the products seen on the RBLI shop, including our fantastic new Falklands collection.
