National Highways doubles its impact at RBLI’s social enterprise and celebrates three years of partnership

We are proud to celebrate three years of Highways Challenge with National Highways at our social enterprise Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Co.

The Challenge has driven outstanding growth in social value procurement at National Highways. Since it launched in March 2022, National Highways and its Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractors have doubled their impact, giving meaningful work to veterans in our social enterprise, many of whom live with physical and mental disabilities.

We are very grateful to National Highways and its contractors Amey, Chevron, Colas, Eurovia, HW Martin, Ringway, and VINCI.

Andrew Stephenson, National Highways Procurement Director, says:

“At National Highways we want to maximise the social value impact that we can have while we work to manage motorways and major A roads all over the country.

Our partnership with Royal British Legion Industries is a key way in which we can have that positive impact. Their social enterprise provides meaningful employment for military veterans after they have served their country. They are a key partner of National Highways, manufacturing thousands of signs for our road network to a very high standard.

In the last three years, I’m proud to say that our volume of work with them has doubled. I’ve seen what this means for myself – thanks to our partnership, they offer jobs to veterans who served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other recent conflicts providing them with a second career.

I’m very grateful to all the contractors who have supported this work, especially Amey, Chevron, Colas, HW Martin, Ringway, and Vinci. I look forward to continuing to work with them and others in the next year to make a difference to even more veterans.”

Colin Harsant, Managing Director of Social Enterprises, adds:

“The consistent and committed support of National Highways has generated transformational growth in our road production lines, with twice as many veterans employed in this area of social enterprise compared to when the challenge started. We look forward to increasing this further over the next few years as new partners join the challenge of buying social, and making a difference with every order.”
