What is the Tommy Ride Route?

Aylesford – Dover – Calais – Dunkirk – Ypres.

Where is the start point for the ride?

The start venue will be RBLI, Capel Morris Centre, Hall Road, Aylesford, Kent, ME20 7NL

What is the distance of the ride?

The Tommy Ride to Ypres is approximately 190km broken down increments of between 80 – 90k per day. We can confirm the exact distance when we have the final route.

Can I use an e-bike?

Yes, we happily welcome participants on an e-bike.

Do I need to provide my own bike or do you provide a bike?

RBLI are unable to provide bikes for you, you do need to provide these yourself, we have various companies we recommend should you wish to hire one.

What time do we register and depart?

Registration will be early on Friday 26th June. Further information and exact timings will be sent out in due course, we expect all riders would have left by 830am at the latest.

What is the typical speed of a rider on this event?

Traditionally this challenge attracts a mixed group of cyclists, from those starting out to everyday riders. On average there will be riders cycling at around 10mph through to 17/18mph.

What happens to my luggage?

Your main luggage will be transported from hotel to hotel throughout the duration of the trip. You will be given a luggage tag for your main bag so that it arrives at the correct hotel. We do ask you to carry a small day bag for all those essentials, like a waterproof jacket, a jumper, extra snacks and your passport when riding.

Where will we be staying?

Accommodation on route is in 2/3 star hotels, picked for their proximity to the route. The accommodation will be primarily based on two people sharing.

Can I book accommodation for my family?

You can have family join us for celebratory meal and stay overnight is Belgium on Saturday night, there will be an and an additional charge for dinner and accommodation.

I am worried that I might get lost?

You will get a briefing every day to let you know what to expect and to give you a rough idea of where you are going to be heading that day. In addition you will receive a map of the entire route to help you navigate your way. You will also have a ride captain in your group to ensure you get to where you should be. Please note that unfortunately we are unable to accommodate any additional support vehicles that you may wish to bring along.

What happens on the final night in Belgium?

We will attend the Last Post Ceremony at The Menin Gate at 8pm and celebrate your achievements with a celebratory 3 course meal. After dinner the evening is free for you to sample the delights of Belgium and grab a few drinks with new found friends.

If I stay in Belgium can I cycle back?

We do all need return to the RBLI village together on Sunday to ensure the safety of the riders inline with RBLI’s insurance policy.

Where do I collect my bike from on Sunday?

When you arrive back in Aylesford, your bike will be waiting at RBLI’s Capel Morris centre for you.

Do I need to wear a cycle helmet?

Yes, you must wear a cycle helmet to take part in RBLI’s Tommy Ride.

What are the return times?

As of yet, we don’t have confirmation of the departure times, however, we usually have you back to Aylesford between 1600 – 1730 local time.

What happens to my passport during the trip?

You will need to keep hold of your passport throughout the trip and will need to keep this safe.

Do I need to get travel insurance?

Yes, we recommend getting travel insurance that not only covers you but your bike as well.
